How to "mattify" your face this summer

Grace Lee saves the day with her go-to tips to keep your face freshly matte all summer long.

“Summertime and the living is easy” they always say, huh? More like, “summertime and my face looks like I’ve just ran a half marathon as soon as I leave my house.” No matter how much makeup we slather on, the summer heat always manages to draw out every drip of oil and showcase it on your face for the world to see.

So how do we get the sought-after matte look? And how do we make it last all day? Makeup artist Grace Lee is here to share all of her insider tips to do exactly that. Sit back and take notes, ladies — this is one to pass down to your granddaughters.

  1. First, applying a primer is key. Not only will this already simulate a matte look, it will also fill in your pores for a smooth finish before you apply your foundation.
  2. Use an oil-free foundation. This part is crucial. You are trying to rid of the oil look, so steer clear from adding in unnecessary extra oils. You can also try a matte foundation if that is in your budget. Note: Be sure to choose a product that won’t make your face look too powdery (“cake face” is the slang name for this). There should be some moisture, but the matte factor will control it.
  3. As for blush, Grace Lee recommends a powder as this will help diffuse the excess oils in the summer. For winter, however, a cream blush is a great way to give your skin a little moisture.
  4. Most importantly, you have to work with your skin. Everyone is different, so you have to see which products work for you and which don’t. It’s all about creating a balance. It may take a few trials to get it right, but when you do, it’ll be worth it!
