It seems as the weather gets hotter, your closet looks emptier. Finding that perfect summertime getup in your own closet just isn’t as good as getting something new at the mall, or if you’re budget-conscious, a consignment store. Consignments stores are gaining more and more recognition for locating fab deals — even A-list celebs have hopped on the hand-me-down bandwagon. But before you go on a spending spree, check out Susie Wall’s expert pointers to get the most bang for your buck at consignment stores.
- Timing is key. If you’re selling a piece of your wardrobe at the consignment store, the right time can make you the most money. If you have a summer dress you aren’t crazy about, dropping it off in late July isn’t the best move as it will go on sale immediately. Be sure to bring your summer pieces before summer starts, and the same goes for the rest of the seasons.
- Shop in the right areas. Whatever your style, try to find a neighbourhood that best suits the look you’re going for. For example, if you’re after elegant pieces, find a consignment store inside a swanky neighbourhood for the best selection.
- High-end consignment is something to seriously consider if you have a busy social life, but also if you want items that not everyone will already have. This is a great way to establish your own personal style on a tight budget.
- Establish a relationship with the shop. A good rapport is important to maintain because they will give you the scoop on what’s new in store and what they are in dire need of.
- Distinguish a ‘donate’ and a ‘consign’ pile. Especially for warm winter wear, your hand-me-downs can keep someone who may not be able to afford a jacket warm in the icy months.
