From crooked eyeliner to lipstick on your teeth, we all suffer from makeup emergencies from time to time! Want a quick fix? Makeup artist Tracy Peart shares her top solutions for common makeup mistakes – and some prevention tips, too!
Help! My eyeliner went on crooked!
Prevention: “Keep the strokes fine if you want a straight line,” says Tracy. To prevent a wobbly look, don’t try to draw one continuous line with your eyeliner. By doing short strokes, you’ll get a cleaner line.
Solution: A cotton swab and a little bit of saliva is the magic combination! “It might sound gross, but saliva is the best eraser,” Tracy says. If you use makeup remover, you’ll end up removing more makeup than you intended.
Help! My mascara went on too clumpy and thick!
Prevention: Let each coat of mascara dry before you apply any additional layers. Tracy compares it to painting a wall – you’ll end up with streaks and clumps if you don’t let each coat dry properly.
Solution: Take a clean mascara wand and comb it through your lashes to remove the clumps. Tracy has a super-thrifty way to collect clean mascara wands: save your old wands when you throw out an old mascara! Just wash the wand well and store it for clumpy lash emergencies.
Help! I got lipstick on my teeth!
Prevention: Tracy recommends an old beauty pageant trick: put a bit of Vaseline on your teeth! This will make your teeth slippery, so that your lipstick won’t be able to stick to your lips. Another way to make sure your lipstick doesn’t move from your lips: don’t mash your lips together after application! Doing this will inevitably result in lipstick landing where you don’t want it, including your teeth.
Solution: Tracy teaches us to put your index finger in your mouth, wrap your lips around it and then pull your finger straight out. This will get all of the extra product onto your finger, rather than your teeth, so that you can easily wipe it off with a tissue and get on with your day.
Help! I put way too much blush on my cheeks!
Prevention: When loading up your brush with blush, remove the excess product on a tissue before applying the blush to your face. This will help you control the amount of product you apply.
Solution: Take a clean sponge and lightly rub it across the over-blushed areas to remove some of the excess.
