Searching for the perfect red lipstick can be challenging but finding one that can stand the test of time is an even more daunting task. That is why I went on the hunt to find unique formulas and perfect red shades for 3 different women.
Few women wear red lipstick every single day. Most red lipsticks end up at the bottom of a makeup bag, only to be pulled out around the holidays. Due to this, I chose two really accessible lipsticks at reasonable price points, so you can justify buying them – just in case you rarely wear it. I also included one elevated choice as well for those that frequent a red lippie. And I got some familiar faces to test them all out.
Lipstick #1 – Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink
For Mairlyn, I chose this warm shade that is technically more of an orangey-red. it is a liquid lipstick that has a pointed doe-foot for easy application and to really help you shape the lips. I knew this shade would look fantastic on her fairer skin tone and really brighten up her face. The liquid lipstick is extremely pigmented and dries to a comfortable finish. Not too drying. This lipstick is fantastic at being transfer-proof. Kissable, yet pigmented.
Lipstick #2 – Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick
For Julie, I opted for a traditional Hollywood red. (The likes of what Marilyn Monroe used to wear) This lipstick in my opinion is by far the most comfortable to wear. It has a creamy texture that remains comfortable for hours on end. *Not as transfer-proof because of its creamy texture. However, applied in thin layers, this does last a significant amount of time and the colour pay-off is exceptional. Wouldn’t attempt any makeouts with this lippie on. Tone-wise, this shade is in between a warm red and a cool red.
Lipstick #3 – Smashbox Always On Cream to Matte Lipstick
The most expensive of all the lipsticks. This is the ultimate matte lipstick. Glides on creamy and dries to an ultra-matte finish. The best part: won’t smudge, budge, or feather. The shade I chose for Vivian is a blue-based red which is fantastic at keeping your smile looking bright white. The more blue-based the lipstick, the whiter your teeth look. This red shade has a beautiful depth to it which I think compliments Vivian’s skin tone beautifully.
Tips to give your long-wear lipstick an extra boost:
Something to remember is that the hourly claims on lippies aren’t always how long they actually last, but there are things you can do to help your long-wear lipsticks withstand a busy day.
- Exfoliate and hydrate lips before applying
- Fill in lips with lipliner
- Apply in very thin layers
- Place a tissue over your lips and blot translucent loose powder on top of your lips to further set the lipstick. (Helps to blot the lipstick as well)
- Avoid eating anything that is really oily. Anything oily will naturally break down the lipstick the same way an oil cleanser would.
