If you’re looking for some fun, educational activities to do with the kids this winter break, tech expert Lisa Chang’s got you covered.
For most of us, the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics are either wildly exciting and inspiring – or extremely daunting.
Lisa Chang is sharing great projects to do with the kids at home while on winter break. They use what you already have at home to ignite a passion for STEM.
1. LEGO Ornaments
My house can’t get too many trees, so this was a great excuse to build another one. I used the free app, Pinterest, to get some great ideas. Lego ignites creativity, curious observation and critical thinking. The possibilities are endless!
Holiday LEGO ornaments:
- Candy e
- Star
- Rudolph and Santa Sleigh
- Candle
- Christmas Tree
- Present
- Music Chart
- Christmas themed window
For every Christmas/Holiday creation shared on social media using the hashtag #BuildtoGive, the LEGO Group will donate a LEGO set to a child-in-need. Take a photo of your ornament and share it on social media or LEGO Life using the hashtag #BuildToGive before the end of December.
2. Google Santa Tracker
Using the gift of technology, we can keep track of Santa and so much more with the Google Santa Tracker. Santa’s Village is the perfect place for families to celebrate the season. You’ll find all your favourite characters together with fun, educational and interactive activities for every age.
This year, the Google Santa Tracker got a serious upgrade by including Coding activities, fun games, videos and a series called Christmas Around the World – which celebrates different holiday traditions in various countries, teaching different languages, translations, map quizzes and more!
Learn to code with Santa’s Elves: The elves are always working on their coding skills. Explore games that will teach you the basics. Anyone can try their hand at coding!
Discover holidays around the world: The holidays can look quite different from place to place. Santa Tracker Traditions lets you learn how the world celebrates the season with games and quizzes galore.
Never Miss a North Pole Minute: Use the Google Assistant to find out more about Santa Claus during December! This integration is available in select languages.
3. At-home Science Experiments
Learn more about today we are going to learn all about Potato Starch! Shockingly it’s in a lot of food products so what a great way to create a conversation around why it’s used, what it’s in and how it’s created. Again, using Pinterest you can find hundreds of at-home science experiments to keep the kids busy and off the screens during the holidays.
