Don't Leave For The Hospital Without This Newborn Bag Checklist

Have a little one on the way? Don't leave home without crossing off the essentials on this checklist.

Giving birth is stressful for any mother on a regular day, now throw in COVID and it’s a special “baby-crazy” moment. Whether your pregnant with your first child or the eighth, this list is perfect for any family that’s about to get a little bigger.

Mom’s bag:

  • Extra PJ’s – You will want something comfy to change into after being in your birthing gown
  • Adult Diapers – Otherwise they will give you a massive pad, the size of a pillowcase and you will try and fit that in your underwear. It is uncomfortable and ridiculous so wear the adult diapers.
  • Comfortable underwear– When the bleeding slows down and you can wear normal sized pads, you will be happy you have some full back granny panties
  • Robe and/or blanket (they don’t have good ones in the hospital) – the blankets in the hospital are not made for comfort or even warmth. A favourite blanket will make you feel more comfortable and cozier in this unfamiliar place
  • Favourite Pillow – Pillow options are brutal. The smell of home and home comfort will be welcome after you’ve gone through giving birth.
  • Snacks and Favourite Drink –Even if you don’t want this during labour when it is all over, you will be ravenous. Bring some comfort foods. There should be a microwave on site for you to use. Also, you’ve waited for 9 months so don’t forget your celebratory bottle of bubbly!
  • Slippers or Warm Socks –Again, comfort. My feet were always cold.
  • Going Home outfit (comfy sweats and sweater) – comfort! And it will be nice to put on fresh clothes before you go home to start your new life.
  • Mask – You can’t go anywhere without a mask these days, especially a hospital.
  • Toothbrush + deodorant + toothpaste – Just so you don’t feel gross
  • Chargers! – Imagine a long labour and then not being able to take a picture of your little one or call your parents or order sushi to your hospital room because your phone died? Bring chargers.

For the baby’s bag

  • Going Home Outfit– they need something to wear on the way home.
  • Receiving blankets/Muslin Blankets – these blankets are multi-purpose. I like to have extra to practice swaddling with a nurse, for practicing skin to skin and for putting over your baby in the car seat
  • Hats –Babies lose so much heat through their heads. It’s important to keep them warm.
  • Car Seat – You cannot leave the hospital without a car seat!

For Dad’s bag

  • Clean underwear –Please don’t smell bad. I cannot have you near me during labour and have you smell bad
  • Clean shirt –See above
  • Toothbrush + deodorant + toothpaste – If you will be close to me, please have a nice breath.
  • Snacks + Drink– Men get hungry too
  • Mask – See above
