With summer on the horizon, it’s time to start thinking about sun safety. How do we incorporate this into our daily beauty regimen so that we feel our best while protecting our health? Beauty Expert Bahar Niramwalla shares her list of sun FAQs:
Should I wear sunglasses indoors?
- Standard glass windows block UVB but not UVA rays, so YES you should always wear sunglasses inside.
- UVA rays cause premature aging like dark spots, wrinkles and also skin cancer. Staying protected and wearing sunglasses every day will get you into a routine of protecting your skin!
How much sunscreen is enough?
- General consensus: a shot glass for the body (approx. 6-7 teaspoons)
- 1/2 teaspoon for the face and neck
Keep in mind that these are all approximate numbers. The quantity of sunscreen needed depends on your skin tone and body shape. You need to apply enough to create an even layer across your skin for thorough protection. You’re better off being extra generous just in case you’re not sure. Work the product around your face and skin to be certain that it’s being absorbed into your skin.
If my makeup has SPF do I need more sunscreen?
- Yes! PLEASE. You need additional cream!
- Remember, you’re supposed to wear approx 1/2 a teaspoon’s worth of it on your face and neck, almost no one is wearing that much makeup! So your SPF makeup is in addition to your SPF cosmetic product.
Are synthetic sunscreens better than mineral ones?
- No, they do the same thing: protect your skin from UV rays
- You’ll find that the “synthetic” ones are in formulas that are sheer or invisible and
make for a nice slippery feel - Some mineral ones are often found in “sensitive skin” formulas or acne-prone
skin formulas
What are the most important tips when it comes to sun protection?
- Don’t forget about your hands, tops of ears and LIPS! They need sun protection
too - You can get colour on your skin from using self-tanners for the face and
body versus trying to purposefully roast out in the sun and harm your skin
