How to Incorporate Biophilic Design in Your Home
Biophilia is the human desire to commune with nature. And the biophilic design is not exactly a new concept, but what’s happened is that with the state of the world we live in, between Covid and climate change and so many social stressors, this has become one of the biggest design trends for 2022. Here’s how to add some biophilic elements to your home
Windows and doors
It can translate to adding more architectural elements like more oversized windows and doorways or creating outdoor rooms. The concept pushes us to blend the boundaries of indoor and outdoor spaces. So we’re seeing that when people renovate, even in a smaller semi, they prioritize large, sliding doors onto a backyard or outdoor space. It’s even translating to fewer window treatments. Like, why block the view unless you have to? But of course, not everyone is renovating, and not everyone has the budget to change out windows and doors. There are many ways to achieve this on a budget!

Wallpaper and murals
Murals have been gaining popularity alongside wallpaper, and this is a way almost to create that view if you don’t have a gorgeous big window looking out over a forest. These are all from Rebel Walls, and what I want to point out is that they are an artistic interpretation of nature. We’re not talking about photorealism here. We want something stylized, fanciful, or even a little abstract, that can be worked into the design of a room. You’re not fooling anybody with a natural stand of birch trees.
Art
Prints are a great way to accentuate any wall and bring in a nice earthy element. Opting for prints with warm and sandy tones or dark and green tones fits the biophilia trend nicely. This print is from Blue Crow Gallery and perfectly captures the vibes that the movement is going for.
Natural Materials
Biophilic design is not just about looking at plants and trees. It’s about surrounding yourself with clean air, natural materials, and having a reverence for nature. You want to help protect the environment by considering the impact of your consumer decisions.

Plants
It’s a key part of this look and movement. However, if you have a hard time keeping plants alive, have no fear! A few beautiful branches or stems arranged in a vase can last weeks and can add that same leafy goodness to a room. Even dried botanicals frowned upon ten years ago have come back with a vengeance and are anything BUT grandma’s potpourri.
