7 Holistic Ways To Improve Your Physical And Mental Health

If you need a little help to improve your physical and mental health, we've got you covered with these tips.

We’re a few weeks into 2021 now, how are you feeling? If you need a little help to improve your physical and mental health, we’ve got you covered with these tips, courtesy of nutritionist and lifestyle expert, Andrea Donsky.

#1: Be Aware of the Link Between Anxiety and Diet

Diet has a massive impact on our mental health, for better or worse. In nutritionist and chef Liana Werner-Gray’s book “Anxiety Free with Food”, she talks about the link between anxiety and diet. She discovered that the main dietary issues that people with anxiety face are deficiencies in magnesium, omega 3’s and amino acids. So, if you struggle with anxiety, break out some seeds and fortified cereals!

#2: Eat Healthy Fats

It’s important to be mindful of the type of oils and fats you’re eating. Not all fats are created equal. As a general rule of thumb, there are fats that are both healthy and necessary in a balanced diet (known as unsaturated fats). In excess, trans fats create inflammation in the body and weaken the immune system. Unsaturated, healthy fats, on the other hand, reduce inflammation in our body and are good for our heart, brain, hair, skin and nails.

Examples of “good fats” include olives, coconut oil, avocados, omega 3’s, nuts and seeds. Another, lesser-known healthy fat is Malaysian palm fruit oil, which is rich in tocotrienols. What’s more, Malaysian palm fruit oil is produced sustainably without harming the environment or animals!

#3: Take Care of Your Oral Health

Many people don’t know that bacteria can build up on our tongue over time regardless of brushing and flossing. When this happens, it can lead to bad breath and poor oral health. To fix this, you can use a tongue cleaner,  before and after you brush your teeth to scrape off excess bacteria. Dr. Tung’s cleaner is great because it’s shaped like a “U” so it can reach the back of your tongue. You can also use your toothbrush to clean your tongue, but a tongue cleaner has been shown to be five times more effective.

#4: Switch to Natural Cleaning Products

Because we’re spending most of our time indoors these days, it’s more important than ever to switch to natural cleaning products. The Environmental Protection Agency says that household cleaning products are a source of pollutants in our homes because conventional cleaning products can contain synthetic chemicals like perfumes, sulfates, and dyes.

Switching to a household cleaner like Nature Clean will help keep your home pollution-free, while still working well to remove grease, grime and sticky surfaces. They also smell great!

#5: Make Yourself Look Great

In the age of Zoom, many of us are working from home in our sweatpants, and there’s nothing wrong with that! That said, an easy way to give yourself a mood and confidence boost is to look great, even if it’s only from the waist up. Trying a new hairstyle or using a great lipstick can go a long way to making you feel like a whole new person. We recommend the Vegan Lip Care Collection from Dina Pugliese, a non-toxic, certified organic collection that comes in every skin tone. Now that’s work-from-home glamour!

#6: Scent Up Your Environment

Adding a scent to commonly used areas can work wonders, especially when the scent is in the form of essential oils, which can help with memory, focus and even congestion! From using them topically to cooking with them, these oils can be incredibly diverse in application and use. New Roots Herbal has an entire line of 100% pure,
certified organic essential oils. If you have a toothache, clove bud is the way to go, and lavender can help with insomnia and restless sleep.  Look into the effects of different scents to see what might work for you.
