6 Sustainable DIY Christmas Décor Ideas

Deck the halls with sustainability.

Decorating the home for the holidays always add some holiday magic. With home decor, there can be a lot of waste so here are ways to reuse, recycle and upcycle our holiday décor.

Since we cannot invite guests indoors many are doing what I call “knock, drop and go” so let’s create an environment that is festive and inviting for our porch drop-offs.

Wreathes

A great alternative to a plastic wreath is to buy locally handcrafted natural wreaths, or DIY your own. What’s great about these grapevine wreaths is that you can pull out your decorations at the end of the season and store them away. Pull them out next year and make a whole new creation.

I decorated my wreaths with pine, cedar and boxwood branches, and I added some dried pampas and cranberries for colour and textures. For the small wreaths, I just tucked in pine branches and made popcorn garland. Popcorn garlands are such a great way to keep the kids busy, and they thread easily.

These DIY wreaths are so easy, you just tuck the branches and put your decorations right in between the vines.

Porch Christmas Tree

A living Christmas tree is a great way to create a centrepiece for your porch. It’s something that can sit on the porch or come into the house and you can plant it in the yard after the holidays. Be sure to dig your hole before the ground gets too cold.

Ornaments

These Christmas ornaments are thrifted, now when you’re thrifting the decorations they may not be cohesive or one colour scheme but we have got an easy DIY for that. After painting your home there is always leftover paint so we are going to take advantage of those cans of paint.

Instructions

  1. Mix roughly 1 tbsp of baking powder to 1 cup of water-based wall paint, play around with the baking powder measurements until you find a texture you like.
  2. It can take about 2-3 ornaments to get full coverage.

Sanitation Station

Over on this side of my porch, we’ve set up a sanitation station. I’ve got this little trolley set up with hand sanitizer, wipes and masks, for anyone dropping off goodies and any packages or deliveries. It’s important to be mindful and create thoughtful spaces that allow us to continue our holiday traditions in the safest way possible.

LED Lights

We can’t talk about porch decorations without the lights. And as much as I love vintage items, LED lights is a great option because they use 80% less energy than traditional bulbs and they will last for up to 2500 hours. So, I say, time to recycle the old bulbs and get yourself some LED Christmas lights.

Fresh Greenery

Wrapping it up with all of this fresh greenery, I’ve got a mix of pine, cedar and boxwood branches that I’ve strung together with jute to create handmade garlands.

Instructions

  1. Create small bundles with the different mixed greens, and tie your bundle together with some floral wire.
  2. Measure how long you want your garland to be, using your jute string to measure. Measure twice, cut once.
  3. Once we measured, tie the small bundles to the jute that we had measured and cut. Once all the bundles are attached, you can bring the whole garland outside and hang that up.

You can also create small bundles for the planters with fresh greenery and mini LED lights that are battery operated and can be used for years.
