Since budgeting can be a priority for many at this time, I wanted to curate a list of summer basics that anyone can score on the cheap. The best thing about basics is that they are versatile pretty much by definition. Versatile basics make getting dressed fool proof, and since basics have a high wear ratio the cost per wear is fantastic. Celebrity stylist Kim Appelt has a trendy list of all the basics that will get you through the summer looking classy and with little stress.
- Tank Top
You need neutral tanks in your closet, not having these in your summer wardrobe is like not having a coat in the winter. It’s a need. If black and white is not your thing then go for tan and navy. I personally love the Caslon wide strap ones at Nordstrom, great length, true to size and covers bra straps and under $30. Also don’t be afraid to spend a bit more in this area because these get a lot of wear. - Simple Flat Slides
Again I suggest a neutral colour so that you can get the most wear out of them. Something other than a rubber flip flop, a dressier flat that can be worn around the backyard, to run errands and also thrown on with a sundress. Look into the Jeffrey Campbell Amarra Sandals. - Midi Loose Sundress
The more loose the better if you ask me. A nice neutral coloured cotton or linen dress can take you from the pool to a bbq quickly. Throw a jean jacket on to dress it up for a patio evening. - Jorts
Jean shorts are basically the leggings of the summer ( but not as comfortable) Regardless of what your style is there is a pair for you. The bermuda length is my favourite, pair these with a blazer and you are ready to strut your stuff! Hint – Value Village is filled with old jeans waiting for you to make a pair of your own shorts…bring back memories?? Hello $7 jean shorts! And if you’re fuller in the leg then go for a loose linen short for easy breezy and remember if thigh chafe is an issue you can always use stick deodorant on your inner thighs. - Black One Piece Swimsuit
This is as basic as it gets, and fortunately they are trending right now so you can look cool while feeling good about what you have on. and don’t forget a tankini can replace the one piece – it gives great coverage in the chest area. - Sunglasses
You actually need a few pairs, take a look around and in your friends closets too. Different outfits need different glasses so find a few pairs that look good on your face shape and keep a little stockpile. Heavy plastic frames are not going to look as good with a linen white dress as a pair of metal frame dressy 70’s style. Hint – if you put on a pair of glasses and something feels off, keep trying different pairs until you feel like you got it right! - Woven Bag
I love these for summer. I found many at Urban Outfitters, Topshop and The Bay for under $30. They add to your look and are very handy to take to the beach and to a dinner party with your wine and salad! - Loose Button Down
A summer classic. White cotton or linen is my favourite. It can be worn overtop of a bathing suit, a dress or with a pair of shorts.
