How to Make a Homemade Meal Kit

Looking for something thoughtful to gift a loved one? This homemade meal kit is the perfect solution.

We all know someone who could use a boost right now. Maybe it’s a frontline worker, a single mom, or it’s your best friend’s birthday. We’re seeing a lot of meal kit services online, some pricier than others, but to deliver a meal to someone you care about is really meaningful right now. Make this experience even more special by creating one filled with personal touches!

How to Make it:

  1. The base: You can start by using a large bin, Tamara used one from the dollar store. Using a bin that’s flat on the bottom makes it easy to load, and can also be easily wiped clean. Plus, it has enough of a lip to keep the items contained rather than having some items fall out. To enhance the presentation consider using a beautiful napkin, preferably cloth, instead of tissue!
  2. What’s on the menu: Create and include a beautiful menu inside the meal kit! Tamara designed and printed a menu so that her friend knows exactly what’s included. This brings a certain level of formality which is unexpected. Using free and easy to use online software such as Canva is ideal and super easy to play around with.
  3. To drink: Include a fun drink that you know they’ll love. For example, we all know that new moms need coffee and lots of it. Tamara’s decided to include lots of coffee for her friend, knowing that she is up half the night with a baby. To make it extra special though, Tamara created an iced coffee for her with almond milk and served it in a mason jar. If you decide to make an iced drink, make sure it’s the last thing you pack before delivering it so it doesn’t melt! Aside from coffee, she also included some of her blueberry and ginger kombucha, which she’s shared with us on Cityline before.
  4. To eat: Mason jars are a great way to deliver food without making a mess! Tamara used her mason jar to make her friend a chocolate coffee chia pudding. Throw in a personalized dessert, your friend’s favourite banana bread or maybe a fresh batch of cookies! Tamara included her husband’s loaf of sourdough, and along with it, she sent some Concord grape jam.
  5. Ambiance: Consider adding fresh flowers into the basket. Remember, you’re trying to gift more than just delivering the food itself. Include your friend’s favourite CD in the meal kit! Or, another fun idea is to text or email a link to a playlist so that they can listen while they have the meal.
