Instructions

  1. Create an abstract cactus outline on your card stock. And cut it out. This will be your cactus pattern.
  2. Trace your pattern onto two sandwiched pieces of felt.
  3. Cut out your felt pieces.
  4. Sew your two cactus shaped pieces together (making sure to leave a hole at the bottom for stuffing). You can do this with either a sewing machine. Or whip-stitches sew the two pieces together with a needle and embroidery thread in a coordinating colour. Don’t worry if this isn’t perfect.
  5. Grab some fabric paint and stipple dots over the cactus. These are your cactus spines. This can be random or in a grid. Let dry for 4 to 6 hours or until completely dry, so you can turn them over and stipple the other side.
  6. Stuff cactus shape with polyfil. You can sew the bottom closed to keep all the stuffing in if you like.
  7. Create an abstract shape on your card stock for your flowers. This will be your flower pattern.
  8. Trace this shape onto one of your coloured pieces of felt (orange, pink, yellow, etc).
  9. Cut out two flower pieces in two different colours of felt.
  10. Using your embroidery thread, sewing directly through the middle of the two pieces. This is the centre of your flower. Pinch the flower around the centre, making the petals of the flower stand out a little. Sew a few times back and fourth at the bottom of the felt flower. This will help create and hold the flower shape.
  11. Sew the flowers onto the cactus where you think they would grow.
  12. Place your cactus into your small terracotta pot – this can be hot glued in if you like. This will ensure it doesn’t pop out.
  13. Add in mini pompoms in brown to look like small gravel/dirt.
