Decorating with Fabrics: Simple ways to use textiles to update your space

Easy ways to decorate your home with trendy textiles

Embroidery hoop fabric collage
Fill inexpensive embroidery hoops with fabric

  1. Collect embroidery hoops in varying sizes.
  2. Choose fabrics in complementary colours and patterns.
  3. Open an embroidery hoop by twisting the knob at the top, and separate the two hoop pieces.
  4.  Lay the inner hoop underneath the fabric, and place the outer hoop on top, sandwiching the fabric between.
  5. Stretch the fabric out flat, then twist the knob to secure the hoops back together.
  6. Pull the fabric taught as needed.
  7. Run a line of hot glue around the exposed inner hoop edge, then pull the fabric tight along the glue.
  8. Trim down any excess fabric.

Tip: When hanging the hoops, use long nails in order to allow the hoops to hang straight up and down.

Create your own textile print
Paint and stamp directly on fabric to make your own design.

  1. Choose a tightly woven fabric in a natural fibre (such as cotton or linen) for the best results.
  2.  Look for paints made specifically for fabric — they’ll stay put and will remain flexible through washing and drying.
  3. Using stamps, stencils, or brushes free-hand, create a unique design directly on the fabric.
  4. Allow the fabric to dry for at least 24 hours.

Tip: The paint won’t budge, but if you want to add extra durability to the fabric (maybe if you’re painting on fabric that will be used in a high-traffic area), you can spray the fabric with a fabric sealant, waterproofer, or protectant.
