DIY: sandals and a halter top from old scarves

These DIY projects from Julia Grieve take your basic silk scarves and turn it into a fashionable pieces to wear this spring/summer.

Julia Grieve of the Toronto boutique Preloved shows you how to take old silk scarves and turn them into gladiator sandals and a sexy halter top!

1. Lace-up gladiator sandals

Materials:

A pair of flip-flops
Scissors
A long rectangular scarf

Method:

1. Take your scarf and cut it in half, lengthwise. This creates two straps for your sandals.

2. Take one strap and thread it through the tongue of the flip-flop. Repeat with remaining

3. Once you reach the end, you’re done. Tie the rest around your ankle for the gladiator look.

2. Halter top

Materials:

A square scarf
A piece of rope, ideally suede
A sewing machine (or a friend who knows how to sew)

Method:

1. Start with a perfect square scarf, the bigger the better.

2. Take the scarf and rotate it so it’s oriented in a diamond shape. Fold down top corner.

3. You’ll now want to sew a straight line across. (See video.) Thread rope through.

4. Once threaded through, you’re done! The top can be tied in the back.
