How to make your wardrobe look luxe for less
Want to look like a million bucks without maxing out your credit card? Stylist Janice Meredith teaches us how to DIY your way to those luxurious fashion trends, without the big-ticket price.
Purse hack:
Faux leather is inexpensive, but to keep it looking more luxe, look for a structured shape — this will work nicely with the faux leather’s tendency towards stiffness. Look for a pebbled leather or textured style, because it will more closely mimic the matte finish of the real stuff.

Now that you’ve picked the right purse, cut the strap off! The thin strap and small hardware will give away the cost. Attach a thicker, more substantial strap from another handbag. A little (faux) texture can go a long way in elevating an outfit to “expensive” status.
Shoe hack:
Colour blocking is still a super hot trend, and a pop of colour balanced by strong lines updates your basics. Take your basic flat or heeled shoes and tape off the area that you don’t want sprayed. Remember to spray in a well-ventilated area! For her demo, Janice used a spray paint that actually has flecks of 18 kt gold called Krylon metallic spray paint (available at Canadian Tire).
Dress hack:
Inexpensive dresses often come with belts, or a blazer may come with a pin. Swap the freebies and add your own accessories to elevate the look. Never use the accessories that come with your piece. Invest in a few fantastic belts: one that cinches at the waist, and one that is a looser, slouchy tie option. People will notice the great belt and unique shape. This allows the accessory to steal the show. Scarves are also a great way to add a personal touch and make an outfit feel more up-to-date.

Button hack:
Always change the buttons! It’s the most indicative characteristic of an item’s price. When you are replacing your buttons, consider that you can add the new, more expensive ones anywhere. It doesn’t have to be where the old ones were. Also, you can change the look by the style of button you add: modern and clean, boho and earthy, glitzy and elegant.
Necklace hack:
Your accessories are the quickest way to look like you spent big bucks, without actually doing so. Layered necklaces are very on trend. Add more and more, but do it with thought: vary the lengths, vary the charm, vary the link. Use paperclips in the back to help adjust your necklaces up or down to help fill in the empty space. Also, use clear nail polish to help save the finish of the metal.
