March Break is just around the corner and we’re sure that the kids are ecstatic to have a week off! This is a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time with them and build memories, and we want to help you make a mess with them in the kitchen! These delicious and creative treats are just as fun to make as they are to eat!
Frozen banana pops:
March is usually when the weather starts brightening up, which means the frozen desserts will be coming out soon as well. A banana pop is a healthy and great alternative for popsicles.
Method:
- Peel and cut your bananas in half.
- Insert the lollipop stick halfway into the banana.
- Freeze for 30 minutes to an hour.
- Decorate! Let your children decorate their frozen banana pops with their favourite ingredients, such as melted chocolate, peanut butter, sprinkles, candy and almonds.
- Freeze once more for an hour.
- Enjoy!
Mud cupcakes:
This may be the first time you’ll be okay with letting your child eat dirt…okay, well not really, but they will certainly get excited over these cupcakes. These dirt cupcakes are easier to make then it may seem.
Method:
- Bake your favourite batch of cupcakes. You could make your favourite recipe from scratch (like this delicious vanilla cake recipe from Claire Tansey) or bake it from a box.
- Let them cool.
- Layer the cupcake with chocolate icing.
- Smash and mash your favourite chocolate cookies into little bits, until the texture is similar to sand. You could also grind the cookies, but we are sure your little one will enjoy breaking the cookies apart instead.
- Apply the ground cookies onto the cupcake. The icing will help the cookies stick.
- Take gummy worms (you may have to break them in half), cut a little hole into the cupcake and push them into place.
- There you have it, a delicious mud cupcake filled with creepy-crawlers!
Butterfly cupcakes:
How cute are these butterfly cupcakes? Your child will love decorating and munchin’ down on these sweet treats!
Method:
- Bake your favourite batch of cupcakes. You could make your favourite recipe from scratch or bake it from a box.
- Mix green colouring powder into your icing. Apply a layer of this onto the cupcake.
- Take small round candies such as M&Ms and place four or five of them in the centre of the cupcake. This will be the body of the caterpillar.
- Now, take pretzels and place them on both sides of the candies to create the butterfly wings. You can either buy store-bought chocolate-covered pretzels or make them at home by dipping them into melted chocolate and refrigerating them until cool. If your child isn’t very fond of chocolate, you can use plain pretzels.
Fruit caterpillars:
These adorable grape caterpillars will definitely bring a smile to your child’s face. These quick DIY caterpillars are healthy, too, and we’re sure your child will be asking for more!
Method:
- Grab skewers or lollipop sticks.
- Skewer the grapes onto the stick. I would recommend getting both red and green grapes, and even blueberries so your child can have a variety.
- For the eyes, use two chocolate chips. To keep them into place, apply a little bit of icing to the back of it.
- Place them on a plate and watch your children enjoy!
Fruit-filled ice cubes:
If your little ones (or perhaps even you!) don’t enjoy drinking water, this might just do the trick. Freezing fruits into ice cubes will not only make them want to finish their water, but surely add some fun.
Method:
- Boil water on the stove for a couple of minutes. This is a great tip for your ice cubes to stay clear once frozen.
- Pour the boiled water into an ice tray.
- Let your child add their favourite fruits or vegetables into each cubicle. Be sure to cut them into small pieces in case your child begins to eat them after the ice cubes melt.
