With so many different types of denim available, choosing a flattering fit can be a challenge. Chatelaine’s Tyler Franch stopped by Cityline to share his tips on finding the perfect pair of jeans.
If you typically look for slim fit clothing, a slim to straight leg is a good starting point for you. When it comes to seeking for the right fit and look, Tyler recommends a medium to low rise. For pockets, you want them high enough so they don’t bleed onto the leg.
If your body is petite, a high to medium rise jean will elongate your legs, while keeping your torso long and tall. Tyler says skinny jeans with some spandex will allow the jean to maintain its stretch and shape, as well as making it easy for you to walk.
If you’re more of a pear shape, Tyler recommends a pair of jeans with a higher rise to create an hourglass look, while staying fitted through the thigh and flared through the legs. A wide waistband will allow for belting—a great way to add personality to your wardrobe.
Cuffing is a trick that can give you a slim, tapered look in the legs. To achieve this look, simply fold over your seam, and roll up your jeans as needed.
Sometimes paying the extra $20 to tailor your jeans can make a world of difference, Tyler says. If you make an initial investment on a pair of jeans that fit well, chances are you’ll get more use out of them—not to mention making you feel comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing.
Lastly, don’t be afraid to try on many pairs of jeans. Don’t get caught up in the size numbers, grab a few extra sizes larger and smaller, and find the pair that best fits your shape.
