Creative, unique and inexpensive Halloween costumes for kids

Every October, we are met with a challenge: finding the perfect Halloween costume.

Every October, we are met with a challenge: finding the perfect Halloween costume. We all want something creative and unique but at the same time budget-friendly. From costume exchanges to thrift stores and DIYs, there is an easy solution to finding the perfect Halloween costume for kids and adults alike.

Costume Exchange

A costume swap is a great way to give an old costume new life. For something kids only wear once (heaven forbid they trick or treat in the same costume twice!), Halloween costumes are generally very gently used. Call your Mom friends (or Dad friends), neighbours and/or family and arrange a swap of costumes.  Lend, borrow, swap or outright give – exchanging costumes is a free way to look ghoulishly good on Halloween.

Thrift Stores and DIY

Thrift stores are an inexpensive place to find Halloween costumes and accessories. Halloween costumes can be an easy DIY in a thrift store…

Think:

Ripped up dress shirt = zombie

Wedding dress and veil = bride

Overalls, plaid shirt and cowboy boots = farmer

White skirt, white top, wings and halo = angel

Bellbottom jeans and floral top = hippie

Swim shorts, flippers, snorkel and mask = diver

Apron and chef’s hat = chef

Bowling shirt, khakis and a sign saying “winning” = Charlie Sheen

Look to comic book characters, sports figures, pop culture icons and everyday jobs for Halloween costume inspiration.
