put the spotlight on the “Friday Reads” of two of our crew. This week,
we’re taking a peek at the bookshelves of Thea Whyte and Jennifer Tomowich.
Thea Whyte, intern:
Although I’m afraid to say I idolize Martha Stewart because many people consider her to be a criminal, I’ve always thought of her as being one of the greatest entrepreneurs of our time. She truly has done everything: a television show, website, newspaper columns, magazines, books, merchandise, jail.
The Martha Rules by Martha Stewart (Rodale Books) is a practical guide to starting and growing a company. It’s not just for domestic divas – anyone who wants to start or grow their own company can benefit from her experience. She obviously had a lot of time to think about things like the importance of quality and how to build an “a-team” when she was behind bars, as this book is packed with invaluable advice for people in all stages of their working life. Unlike most business books that read like dry toast, this one is a light and fluffy waffle with whipped cream and strawberries. In short, like everything else Martha Stewart has offered to us, this book is a blend of the practical and beautiful.
Jennifer Tomowich, intern:
In the simplest of terms, Ill Wind by Rachel Caine (Roc) is a fantasy novel. Although Ill Wind dabbles in the supernatural (usually an acquired taste among readers), this book features a strong female protagonist with attitude and spunk. The novel follows Joanne Baldwin, a Weather Warden, who controls the weather, wind, and water. Readers are thrown into a world that involves an underground society of many more Weather Wardens who control earth, wind, fire or water. In this world, Mother Nature has a habit of wreaking havoc on the general population and Weather Wardens help keep things in check.
Joanne has, against her will, become an outcast in the Warden community and is on the run in search of someone powerful who can help. She fights, falls in love, and finds that some friends are not what they seem in this thrilling novel of one girls search for help and freedom.
For those looking for an escape from real life and an engaging novel that will excite you through its various twists and turns, I would strongly recommend Ill Wind, the first book in the Weather Warden series and just one book in Rachel Caine’s long list of incredible creations.
