DIY Crayon Art
Looking for a fun-filled art activity to do with your son or daughter one rainy weekend? Check out this fun DIY crayon activity from Karen Sealy!
Materials
• Pre-Stretched Canvas, Any Size
• Crayons (as many packs as you need to cover the length of the canvas)
• Weld Bond (White Glue)
• Heat Gun or Hair Dryer
Method
1. Lay out your crayons, side-by-side, to ensure you like the colour pattern and you have enough to cover the length of your canvas.
2. Starting at the top right corner, glue the crayons, tip facing down the canvas and the top of the crayon flush to the top of the canvas.
3. Allow the glue to dry as per the manufacturer’s instructions (min 1.5 hours).
4. Prop up your canvas to sit on an angle. I leaned my canvas against my upper kitchen cabinets and rested the base on the kitchen counter. Placing a garbage bag under the canvas is a good idea just in case there are rogue wax drips!
5. Using your heat gun or hair dryer, start at one side of the canvas and slowly move to the other.
• You will find that the wax will drip in different directions depending on the direction you point the heat. I found that pointing the heat on the tip if the crayon in a downward direction creates the best results.
Note: A hair dryer takes slightly longer and gives slightly different results. The heat gun melts the Crayons quicker, producing a thinner wax look. I proffered using the heat gun, I felt I had more control and it was faster. Make sure to have the heat gun set on LOW and start further away from the Crayons until you get a sense of how quickly the wax melts.
