This simple but stunning wall treatment from Nicholas Rosaci uses cedar shims to create a mosaic effect. The supplies can be purchased at most home renovation stores, and the most challenging part is simply taking the time to paint the shims! Here’s how to do it:
Mosaic wall treatment
Materials:
Nelson Pro-Line 8″ Cedar Wood Shims (14 shims / pkg.)
Saman Dark Oak Stain #112 8 oz.
Benjamin Moore 2052-60 China Blue Flat paint – 1 quart
Benjamin Moore 2056-50 Baby Boy Blue Flat paint – 1 quart
Benjamin Moore CC460 Inukshuk Flat paint – 1 quart
Benjamin Moore 2122-70 Snow White flat paint – 1 quart
Lepage No More Nails adhesive glue
Gator Medium coarse / Fine coarse – Sanding Sponges
Paint Brush / Foam Paint Brush
3/4″ 8′ x 4′ Plywood Sheets (Optional)
Instructions:
1. Sand the rough edges of the shims for a smoother finish
2. Think about the colour pattern desired for your wall feature design, setting aside enough shims for each colour / stain to complete your design.
2. Paint the sides and front face of several shims with the various paint colours and let dry
3. Using a foam brush, apply the dark stain to the sides and front face of several shims, rubbing off any excess stain, and let dry
4. Glue the shims horizontally onto the wall in the colour pattern of your choice, making sure the shims point in the same direction. Finish gluing all the shims in rows from the top of the wall to the bottom making sure every other row of shims point in the same direction.
5. Cut the ends of the shims, to ensure the shims fit onto the wall perfectly if required.
6. Optional: You can also glue the shims onto Plywood Sheets which can be fastened to the wall for a less permanent, reusable wall feature.
