DIY Shower Curtain

Mary Dobson fashions a bright, funky shower curtain from two beach towels.

DIY was the focus of our recent Decor Panel, and one of the projects we featured was a vibrant shower curtain fashioned from two beach towels, courtesy Mary Dobson. Here are the instructions on how to make it.

Beach Towel Shower
Curtain

Materials required:

2 to 3 beach towels
Coordinating
fabric
Drapery
heading
Snap
together grommets

Instructions:

The size of a standard shower curtain is 72 X 72 so you will
want to determine how close your towels are to that size or if you would like
it to be larger than standard.

Preshrink the towels
and the coordinating fabric.

Piece two (or three) towels together to form the basic body
of the curtain. You may add bands of fabric to the sides to expand the size or
to add contrast.

Determine the depth of the banding you would like to add to the top edge and double, plus
add two inches to this total. Measure the width of the curtain and add 4
inches. Cut a band of fabric to this size.

Fold this band in half, wrong sides together, to form a long
narrow band. Cut one layer of the drapery heading to the finished width of the
curtain. Insert this heading inside the folded band securing it tight against
the fold. Make sure the heading is centered inside the band so there is an
equal amount of excess fabric at each end (2 inches).

Turn the side edge under 1 inch, press and turn and press
again. Machine stitch in place and repeat at the other end.

Place the double unfinished edge of the band right sides
together with the curtain, aligning the side ends. Machine stitch through all
layers to secure.

Overcast the raw edge and press flat.

Mark for the placement of the grommets along the top of the
band, placing them approx 2 inches down from the top fold. Always use an even
number of grommets.

Cut out the center of each grommet and snap the two pieces
together.

Weave the curtain onto a tension rod and hang above your
bathtub.
